review 1: I picked this and one other book by Jane Yolen up at the library to see if they would be good reads for my daughter. I read Briar Rose last year (I think) and liked it, so I was interested to see what her books for younger readers might be like. This is billed as "the real story of Sleeping Beauty". As you know, I like a well written fairy tale re-write. This was dark and sometimes just plain confusing. Sleeping Beauty hardly comes into it at all, and when she does it is as a spoiled infant with awful and demanding parents who force the fey to do their bidding. If I was reading it for myself and not previewing for my tween daughter, if it wasn't quite so dark and if nobody had said anything about Sleeping Beauty, I might have liked it better.
review 2: Picked t
... morehis one up because I have enjoyed several other books by Jane Yolen and I needed a quick, fun read. I love fairy tales and fairy tale retellings so I figured this would fit the bill. I finished it, but kind of skimmed some parts. I just didn't "get" it. It was just kind of a muddled mess of a story about some fey and rescuing some cursed fey prince all while trying to fit in to some kind of sleeping beauty something or other. I didn't think it worked at all. less
