review 1: Genre: BiographyIntended audience: grades 2-4Age range: ages 5-13Summary: A biographical account of Abraham Lincoln's life, beginning with his birth in Kentucky on February 12, 1809 and ending with his assassination on April 15, 1865. The basic facts of Lincoln's childhood and upbringing, his rise in popularity resulting in his presidency, his actions during the Civil War, his reelection and assassination, are all detailed in chronological order in the eleven chapters in this book. The text is written in an almost narrative style, and is heavy with interesting facts, such as how young Abe used to copy passages from books onto a piece of wood and then shave it down when he needed a clean surface to write further. The text is supplemented heavily with black and white sketche... mores of scenarios and maps that seem to be intentionally cartoonish so as not to be mistaken for primary sources from Lincoln's life and times. Other supplements include asides written in different a different font than the rest of the book, which describe things like Lincoln's books or his views on black people, and also a copy of Lincoln's Gettysburg Address and two timelines, one of Lincoln's life one of the world that coincides with important dates in Lincoln's lifetime. Personal response: The text of this book is written at a very simple level, making it ideal for elementary grades. The important basics of Lincoln's life are present, but there's also a lot of 'filler' such as what kinds of books he liked to read, certain practical jokes he played, anecdotes about his honesty and good nature, and other humanizing tidbits that help to paint a picture of Abraham Lincoln as an actual person and not just a face on American currency. Children study Lincoln and George Washington pretty much every year of their lives during February, but all they really ever seem to learn is that these men are dead and that adults think they were important enough to say the same things about them year after year. This biography of Lincoln makes reading about him interesting and would be absolutely comprehendible for even young children being read aloud to. The "Who Was...?" series has published dozens of biographies of historical and public figures that I will definitely make it a point to look for and use in the future.
review 2: 85minute7wordsCivil war/terrible/President/prevent/America/remarkable man/wonQuestionIf you were President, what do you want to do?If I was President, I want to introduce other holidays.I'm interested in history. In my view, Lincoln was the famous Anerican's President. He wanted the country to stay one country, the United States of America. I like his idea to prevent war. less
