review 1: Another venture into LDS fiction. Andy McBride meets Louisa Martin in med school at the University of Utah. Andy is the product of a mainstream LDS upbringing. He is a return missionary and an all around good guy. Louisa, is from a small, fictional town in Southern Utah called Gabriel's Landing. Louisa is the product of a fundamentalist family. The story revolves around the difference in their religious upbringing. This book will give you a look into some of the problems inherent in the polygamous culture. Louisa and Andy are two very likable young people and it is enjoyable to see how they deal with the problem of their divergent backgrounds.
review 2: I read this book because the author is a friend from the League of Utah Writers, but also because th
... moree premise is so intriguing. What happens when two medical students – he's a straight down the line LDS returned missionary, and she's from a polygamous community training to take care of their medical needs – meet at the University of Utah and fall in love? On graduation day, she wins a prestigious award, and then goes back to Gabriel's Landing, her fictitious polygamous community west of Cedar City, and he takes a position in a small town in the hills of Kentucky. This is the story of how they eventually find each other again. Music is woven through the story, adding a layer of enjoyment. The title is taken from an old Utah folk song. It's Janet's first novel, full of wonderful characters, and pets. She told me she had 27 rejections before the book was picked up by a publisher. Some would not even read the manuscript because it deals with polygamy. I read the whole thing in one sitting, and there aren't many books that hold my attention like that. Right now I'm involved in writing more than reading, but I enjoyed taking a break to be delighted this way. She came up with what needs to become a mantra, considering the FLDS flap: Mormons are not polygamists, and polygamists are not Mormons. That's the way to say it. less
