Immortal Jane Austen
review 1: A really interesting supernatural twist on Jane Austen. I loved all the little conversations and observations that echoed Austen's actual works (though the Oscar Wilde-ish quote really made me giggle the most), and I really liked Jane and her struggle with whether she should take the cure or remain one of the Damned (I was voting very vociferously for the latter but then I really liked Luke, so much so that I didn't particularly mind if she didn't end up writing all of her famous works...though in reality that made me sad because I love Pride and Prejudice, Persuasion, the whole lot. Anyway, aside over); I'm very excited that Mullany's working on a sequel (more Luke please!) and I can't wait to see what else she does with the character (personally I'm hoping that after Jan... moree's written her books, she'll meet up with Luke and become a vampire again, but that's just me).
review 2: Like most of these Jane-Austen-come-back-as-the-undead novels, this started out promising enough. Jane, who has recently been turned into a vampire, travels to Bath with her family to take the waters, which is a rumored cure for her current situation. While there, however, Bath is taken by the French, and Jane and the other vampires choose to use their undead power and strength to fight. This premise would have been much more interesting if, in fact, that's what happened in the book. Instead Jane is snubbed by the snooty vampires that are supposed to be training her, and there's never any exciting fighting. Mostly it was the drama of loving someone who doesn't love you back and the difficulty of polite society, which has been done many times before, and much more cleverly. less
