Big Fish Small Fish – Northpoint City

The revamp of Northpoint City had seen quite a number of new tenants moving into the premises, injecting a new life to the mall as well as being a shopping destination for those living in the north.

For those who are familiar with the dining scene in Singapore, Big Fish Small Fish might be a name that rings a bell; originally located at the Punggol Container Bistros, they have since opened a second outlet at Northpoint City which features a bigger dine-in area in air-conditioned comfort decked in a similar style to the original outlet using metal containers and wooden pallet boxes. The menu at the Northpoint City branch had also seemingly expanded as well — apart from serving their signature Fish & Crisp, they also serve sandwiches and rice dishes apart from sides and desserts as well.

(Fish & Crisp – Cod)

Big Fish Small Fish allows patrons to pick their preferred choice of fish at different costs for any order of their Fish & Crisps — options include Dory, Tilapia, Seabass, Salmon and Cod (according to the staff, Dory is the only processed fish option here). We went for the Cod which was also the most expensive option — smooth, creamy and flaky fish encased in a crisp, fried batter; the fish was fresh without any muddy/fishy flavour. The crisps are somewhat similar to chips; hand-cut, deep-fried potatoes that were undeniably crisp and addictive — they work best with the free-flow dips at the free-flow condiments counter just beside the kitchen; while there were plenty of options to choose from, our favourite would be the Curry Mayo. A slightly more wicked option of the curry sauce from the big yellow M, the curry mayo was creamy yet carries just enough of that spiced flavour and savouriness that makes it a great pairing sauce for all the fried items here.

(Fish Cake Fritters)

We also ordered a few of the side dishes to share; such included the Fish Cake Fritters; strips of fried fish cake that were bouncy, yet not too greasy which were decent so snack on but did not quite leave an impression that is as memorable as their signature Fish & Crisps.

(Crispy White Bait)

The Crispy White Bait was crisp yet comes with a bite; slightly meatier than the usual crispy white baits that we have come across so far — something that may not sit well with certain taste buds. That being said, it is a decent item to snack on especially with the free flow sauces that they provide at the counter.

Big Fish Small Fish was a spot we previously loved from our visit to their original outlet at Punggol Container Bistro — while it was our first time trying the sides, the quality of the Fish & Crisps here seems pretty consistent with the Punggol Container Bistro outlet; one that was well-executed with generous portions which we would certainly see ourselves returning for. Glad that these guys are nearer to us now that they are in the north; we wish the folks behind Big Fish Small Fish all the best in whatever that is to come!
