review 1: A badly blurred novel. It attempted to reveal the mythical side of sailing/whaling, but represented those who lived that life via a family who was - at best - a jagged example of unbelievable extremes. I was interested to learn about a lifestyle I could never imagine, and would never embrace, but found the pace sluggish, the characters cold and distant, and the tale so laboriously told that - upon reaching the end - it was hard to come away with much in the way of emotional or educational value.

... moret her mother does up on the widow's walk and it isn't walking. The man frightens her and she kills one of her crows by accident. Traumatizing but tastefully done. I'm interested in her Uncle Mordecai and the missing brother who her mother says doesn't exist. Read December 3rd-5th, 2013 to page 38. (I plan to finish the book sometime in 2014.) less

good audio. Moby Dick and Ahab's Wife fans will enjoy.
