Lunch Lady
review 1: I chose two books for my graphic novels post. The first one is the Lunch Lady series by Jarrett J Krosoczka. I was drawn to this one because my mom has been a lunch lady, now the manager of her own cafeteria, most of my life. Being a lunch lady isn't easy and that's how the lunch lady in this graphic novel is portrayed, she does her job well and that's how my mom always does her job. This book was hilarious! I loved how both the lunch lady's were hero's. There were three kids who got themselves into some trouble and the lunch lady went under cover with help from Betty, the other lunch lady, to rescue the kids and save the original art from the museum. They found out the director was stealing all the real art and replacing it with forgeries. The lunch lady's used that from t... morehe cafeteria as spy equipment and weapons. There was a cookie camera, gum tracker, fork phone and a lot of other fun things to fight off the security at the museum. The illustrations were really basic and the only color that was in it the whole book was yellow. The illustrations were ink on paper and digital coloring but they made the book that much more interesting. There wasn't a lot of color depth to take you away from what was happening. Definitely a series that kids in third to fifth grade would enjoy! The other book I chose was Amelia's 7th-Grade Notebook by Marissa Moss. Amelia is now in 7th grade and she's so excited because she's not seen as the kid 6th grader and she knows her way around the school. The first 7th grade dance had been announced and at first she was excited but then all these different factors came into play and she didn't know if she wanted to go anymore. She's struggling with the normal middle school problems, “am I pretty?”, “will a boy ask me to dance?”, “will my friends ditch me if they get asked?”. Middle school is hard enough then you get all this other stuff thrown at you. Amelia went to the dance with her friend Carly but as soon as they got there a boy asked her to dance and she left Amelia. Amelia got so mad that when Carly came back over she blew up at her and yelled. Carly said she was there to dance, not to baby-sit. Amelia left and went home, her mom found out from her tone that no one asked Amelia to dance. Amelia said that she would NEVER go to another dance. Carly and Amelia's friendship is on the rocks and she doesn't know if Carly is outgrowing her or what. Eventually, like all good friends, they worked it out and everything was fine. In the end, Amelia found out who she was and that middle school wasn't going to be that bad with her friends by her side. She also realized that she can't shove her opinion on people, they will do what they do but that doesn't mean they aren't still there for you.I believe every middle school girl should read this book, it pretty much sums up what a lot of girls think throughout middle school and the different troubles they face. The text for the book is hand-lettered manufactured in China. The designs were done by Lucy Ruth Cummins.
review 2: The Lunch Lady series is funny; filled with zany humor and crazy crime fighting gadgets. This is my second read in the series, and I like Dee and the boys better this time. Yes, Dee makes some bad choices, but she's an active force in the group - so I find the gender problems of the other one I read less problematic in this one. One thing I didn't like? Having joining the "Mathletes" be a punishment for their poor choices. I'm moving into the Mathlete one next, so hopefully they'll learn that math can be fun. Yes, I know not everyone likes math - but I'd like to see things like this displayed positively and not just as a place where the "math geeks" hang out. less
