review 1: A widow with an impressive apron collection takes a little girl and the girl's family under her wing. They support each other through a very difficult Christmas, as the girl--Charlee--gets very sick, and Marva nears the end of her life. Gifts start appearing for Charlee for each of the 12 days of Christmas, along with fantastic stories about the origins of the gifts. It's not until they reach the 13th day of Christmas, however, that understanding truly begins to dawn.Like his "Christmas Jars" books, this one seems intent on encouraging readers to start a similar tradition of their own. Not a bad thing. We could all use a little more empathy for others.
review 2: This was a quick, easy read -- a delightful, heartwarming tale of an unlikely friendship between 9-y... moreear-old Charlee and her elderly neighbor, Marva, or 'Miss Marva' as Charlee prefers to call her. Charlee's family moves to a new little town after her dad's business fails and they lose their home. Now they must try to build a new life in a much different environment. Charlee and Marva discover each other and their lives become intertwined and are forever changed. Their story may change your life, too, or at least change how you look at Christmas and the Christmas carol "The Twelve Days of Christmas." As Christmas approaches, Charlee begins to receive daily letters (from the "Traveling Elves") explaining about each of the "Twelve Days of Christmas" and accompanied with small gifts. From the beginning, a 13th day of Christmas is mentioned; when it finally arrives, it gives a whole new perspective to the holiday. less
