review 1: ARC provided by NetGalleyThe Next Day is a moving nonfictional account of four people’s suicide attempts, what lead up to the events, and what happened afterward. The stories are taken from personal interviews and are accompanied by simple line drawings. An interactive website at thenexday.nfb.ca provides more information. Each year one million people die from suicide, and many more make an attempt. However, it’s not something that is really talked about except to build tension on tv shows. Telling the stories of people who have attempted suicide demystifies the act. Hopefully people who see similar thoughts or behaviors in themselves can seek help before an attempt is made. This is also a good book for people who don’t know anyone who has attempted suicide to learn m... moreore about what goes on in the mind of someone facing this crisis. Hopefully they can reach out if they see similar behaviors in their friends or relatives.
review 2: Received from: Pop SandboxReceived Via: NetGalley.com Suicide is usually a taboo topic in our household. We don't talk about it because it is a given fact in our minds that we shouldn't talk about negative things. I realized after reading this book that we should be more aware of the emotions and state of our love ones. We should check on them, see if they're okay. We only get to live once and we should spend it doing what we love and finding our passion. We should also cherish our time with the family and friends. I know some people find it hard to live. There are many reasons why and four of them are mentioned in this book. The stories mentioned here about why these people tried to commit suicide are just an example on how people may end up trying to kill themselves. The four people mentioned in this book are survivors after they tried killing themselves. It mentions why they tried to kill themselves and what happen to them after. The story was told through simple illustrations that made reading the book a bit comfortable despite the seriousness of the topic. I would just like to say that I was expecting more of how the survivors where able to adapt after their experience because the book was entitled "The Next Day".All in all, the concept was interesting and eye opening to readers everywhere. Not your everyday book to read. less
