review 2: I enjoyed this book so much that I'm feeling quite bereft now that I've finished it... I loved the narrator's voice - an adolescent growing up in the 60s - as well as the stories about the people he meets at a chess club - refugees from the Eastern block. These friends are not on

There is espionnage, danger, romance, betrayal, true love, true friendship... and somehow the writer manages to weave this all together. It's not a Historical Novel that is totally true to the era, but a fantastic novel in which a boy growing up sees political ideals, experience and reality confront one another. less
