review 1: Is there a genre called "chapter-ed family history"? If so, I'd like to complete a master's, focusing on American dynasties, significant and otherwise. Thompson focuses on 30 years in an Iowa family's history, touching on parenthood, marriage, Vietnam, death, regret, second chances. Each chapter gives us insight into a particular family member, and Thompson loves the surprise in the last paragraph of the chapter--a reason to stay awake when you're ready to call it a night.
review 2: At times I really loved this book and other times it was a chore to read. For the positive points, I liked the flow of the book and the different narrators with chapters labeled with time and place. I cared about the four siblings and cousin Chip as they struggled with family p

Thompson's views on farmers, veterans, and the disabled comes through strongly here. And also that most families are complicated and messy. less

Starts really slow. I am glad I stuck with it but the slow beginning was hard to make up for.
