review 1: This book takes a look, with empathy and insight, at current affairs, our culture and society: high school shootings, broken families, single parents, homeless shelters and street people. In the beautiful setting of affluent Marin County, California, poverty is mostly hidden away amongst the redwoods and scenic ocean drives and the opulent houses and cars of the wealthy. These characters draw us in and we want them to find some measure of happiness and success.
review 2: This is truly a book for our times told from the perspective of several characters all trying to figure out how to be human. The author has really captured our hopelessness and hopefulness as we try and navigate in these confusing currents. Although the subject matter is fairly bleak, the inte... morerconnectedness of the characters reminds one that, no matter the circumstances of each of our lives, we are all human and want/need/do the same things. less
