review 1: I almost thought twice about reading this one since I know that the first of the "daughters" in the story did not have a happy ending. Queen Elizabeth might well have been justified in her concern about Katherine Grey's elopement with Edward Seymour (the marriage of two potential heirs to the throne made the union a real threat—and Elizabeth, given her history, did not take threats lightly). Nevertheless, the cruelty of her punishment all but took my breath away. Elizabeth I was a royal bitch. The second story was a bit better, in that Mary Rogers got a better deal, though had the queen lived longer, I rather think that would not have been the case. Liz apparently didn't like seeing other women happily married when she herself abstained from wedded bliss. 3.5 s... moretars.
review 2: When I first began reading this book, I had no idea it was really two different stories in one book. The first half is about Lady Katherine Grey, sister of the ill-fated Lady Jane Grey. The second half is about Mistress Mary Rogers. While at first I was taken off guard at how the book was split up, by the end I realized why the author chose to tell the story in that manner. The contrast between the two women's stories became more powerful when read one after the other. Both women were connected by Elizabeth I, a powerful monarch and yet, also a woman who had to choose between duty and love. I enjoyed this book thoroughly, especially because Lady Katherine Grey's story is rarely told. I felt true empathy all the women in the book, trapped by love, duty, and society, many were forced to make decisions that brought much heartbreak. less
