review 1: Although I have marked this as a 4 star, my official rating would be a 4.5 star. Another enjoyable story by Frost and it was a little light relief from the normal Cat and Bones stories (not that I don't enjoy them - it is just nice to read into a different part of the Night Huntress World).This time round the story was about Mencheres and Kira. It was nice to see a different side to Mencheres, the most powerful vampire we have read about so far in the series. We find out more about his past and Frosts take on vampire history. I was a little unsure of Mencheres in previous books, but this one made me understanding him more and actually like the character.Now Kira, she is a great character. Strong willed, fiesty, but lovable woman, who brings Mencheres back from the br... moreink of darkness. I'm quite sure she will make an appearance in later books and will get on well with Cat!The story was well written giving the right amount of detail for each character and Frost had me hooked in from the start. This is certainly one of my favourite vampire series and I would recommend it to any fantasy / paranormal genre fan.
review 2: Kira Graceling is walking home when she hears a moan coming from a supposedly abandoned warehouse. Knowing someone is in trouble and that the police will take too long to get there, she gathers her courage and enters the warehouse to find a man being tortured. Master Vampire Mencheres has been longing for death since his visions have gone dark. He welcomes this attack by ghouls as a way out of this life. But, he is shocked when a human comes to his rescue. And when the ghouls turn on Kira, Mencheres saves her and takes her to his home to recover. While staying with Mencheres, Kira learns that another vampire wants him dead so he can inherit the powers that were gifted to him by their sire. His enemy has been unsuccessful so far, but sees Mencheres feelings for Kira and knows she will be a useful tool in the power struggle.Mencheres has always been an enigma and never a favorite of mine in the Night Huntress series. But we find out about his background and what makes him tick. He feels responsible for the awful things that wife did before she was killed. Kira is strong minded and independent. She isn't intimidated by Mencheres or his vampire friends. I liked both of these characters very much. I was also happy to see Cat, Bones & Vlad make an appearance in this book. My rating: 4.5 Stars. less

I've always loved Mencheres so I was thrilled to see a story where he got a little lovin. Kira was a private detective who ended up in the wrong place at the wrong time. She ends up thrust into a world of vampires and intrigue that she never knew existed. Meanwhile, Mencheres doesn't want to hurt her anymore, but he also finds himself feeling things he hasn't felt in centuries. Kira is my favorite type of character. Real, down-to-earth, not given to lustful hysterics, tough as nails, but caring and forgiving. She's a good match for a 4500 year old master vampire. Love this world that Frost has created.

It was hard to imagine Mencheres in a sexy way, but Frost did it. He was so reserved it made perfect sense that Kira would have to pursue him! Kira is definitely my favorite leading lady in the Frost books. She is super level-headed, does not run off into danger like a chicken with her head cut off, and knows exactly what she wants and gets it (Mencheres, that is). Sorry to see end of this book.
