review 1: really really good I am so glad I have the others in the series, I can't believe I have not read these books earlier! I am really looking forward to reading Cat and Bones stories, and I have the other series that are related and I'm guessing that is Vlad's story! awesome I have some reading to do. and maybe listen to some more audio books by Tavia Gilbert, damn she's good! Even if you haven't read the other books in the Night Huntress series like me I think you will pick it up easily enough
review 2: “Tell me again what your mentor’s credo was?” he asked, though he remembered her answer from before. “Save one life,” Kira said softly. Mencheres drew her into his arms. “You did,” he whispered before his mouth claimed hers. “You saved mine.”I was
... more looking forward to reading Mencheres story because he definitely had me intrigued based on his presence in the series thus far but I wasn’t sure how I would feel about him as a leading man. Even though I knew that he was incredibly handsome and looked to be only in his early 20s, the fact that he’s over 4,000 years old, all powerful and referred to as Grandsire by Bones, in my mind I always find myself thinking of him as an old man. So it was kind of weird to think of him in a romantic light, but it didn’t take long for me as a reader to fall head over heels for him! He’s definitely an old soul and I found his formality to be charming when it came to interacting with Kira. Despite the circumstances that brought them together initially, he was always polite and respectful with her. He was also incredibly humble and vulnerable despite the massive amount of power he possesses. (“I can almost feel your gaze on me,” he murmured, heat winding into his loins as he sent his bath-warmed blood there at last. “If you expected me not to look, Mencheres, you underestimate yourself.”) I really loved that aspect of him, it really helped to ‘humanize’ him and I think that’s what really enabled me to connect with him.We knew from the last few books that Mencheres was in a bad way due to the outcome of the whole situation with his former wife, Patra. When we first come across him in this book his visions have still not returned and he has accepted the fact that the darkness he sees symbolizes his death and he has resigned himself to that fate, weary of his life of loneliness. He tries to take matters into his own hands by allowing himself to be attacked by a group of ghouls. During this attack, Kira walks by and hears his screams of agony and her “save one life” motto causes her to turn around and try to help. Or course she ends up seeing things that she is not meant to see and is actually almost killed. Mencheres can’t simply allow her to walk away after all she’s seen so he heals her and takes her to his home. Once he realizes after a week of captivity that she is resistant to his mind control, even after trying every trick he knows, he decides to trust that she won’t say anything and lets her go but not before doing something incredibly sweet for her (ok two things…) and walks away from her. Kira felt an attraction to him during their week together and now that she’s no longer his prisoner she seeks out to find him again but what she doesn’t realize is that she inadvertently ends up putting herself right in the middle of the 4,000 year old feud between Mencheres and his biggest enemy Radje. From this point the story really takes off and is an exciting and action packed ride that we’ve come to expect from this series. There was plenty of danger and of course the trademark humor. Kira was an awesome heroine and I think she was the perfect match for Mencheres. Their growing relationship was incredibly romantic and I loved every second of it, and who knew Mencheres could be so sexy? There were some super steamy scenes in this book! I love how strong Kira was and how she would not let Mencheres give up on himself or continue to punish himself for the mistakes of his past. It’s always fun to see a woman bring such a powerful man to his knees. We also got a Cat and Bones sighting which is always enjoyable, however it was Vlad’s appearance in the book that I loved even more! I can’t wait to get to his books! I really loved this book and I look forward to more Mencheres and Kira as I continue to read the other books in the series!! less
