review 1: I have not read a romance novel in years, but I've always loved historical novels. This one intrigued me because of the Chinese history and the idea of a Chinese heroine empowered with swords in a culture and time when women typically had little power. When I began reading, the choice of making this a biracial romance also grabbed my attention. The story delivered on every count. The sword fighting scenes are exciting and carry a ring of authenticity, the romance is compelling but not cloying, the historical setting is fascinating but does not get in the way of the action, and the characters face problems that modern people can understand but which still make sense in their setting. I found myself turning pages easily and really enjoying this story of the ancient rich girl... more who falls for a boy from the wrong side of the Great Wall. I recommend Jeannie Lin to any reader who enjoys historical romance.
review 2: I had really wanted to like this book since I had desperately wanted to read ancient Chinese romance love stories. This was an exhilarating read and I did love the journey the authoress put the readers through. But the ENDING. It was so abrupt and everything was all happy and dandy. I do love happy endings, but this one was so rushed (to the point it felt like the author had a writer's block and decided to end it quickly).The story builds up well, then trips and falls FLAT. less
