review 1: A nice and simple story set in China about a barbarian called Ryam and Princess Ai Li of Tang Dynasty. They are very different from each other. Ai Li is warrior born but becomes a princess when her father gains the throne. She has strong feelings and notions about concepts like honor, ancestors, oaths etc. On the other hand, Ryam is a wandering barbarian serving in a frontier post of the kingdom. Unlike her, Ryam has no such fixation on ancestors and according to him, every one has different concept of honor and it is flexible. When Princess Ai Li learns about the true nature of her would-be husband Governor Li Tao, she flees from the marriage to warn her father the Emperor. On her way to the Capital escaping from pursuing soldiers sent by Li Tao to drag her back, Ryam sav... morees her from bandits. She requests him to escort and protect her until she reaches her home safely. They instantly feel attracted to each other, but honor forbids them to do nothing more than kissing. The rest of the story is about court intrigue, chases through forests and mountains, and how they both struggle against their obligations and fate to be with each other. I loved both Ai Li and Ryam. Their romance is hot and sexy. It is a short fun read to pass time. Nothing serious. Rating: 4.0/5.0
review 2: There are romances and then there are Romances (intentional capital R). This book by Jeannie Lin, which won the RWA's Golden Heart Contest before it was published, is a Romance. To be a romance (small r) a book needs to be a story about two people falling in love, mostly while resisting the notion and mostly while overcoming obstacles to their growing love. To be a Romance, a book has to be about all that and more. It needs to mean something that resonates with the readers long after the book is put down. That something is usually theme, and it usually involves the characters dealing with issues of culture and society as well as deeply personal crises. In this book the issues are as big as they get: duty, family, honor. The barbarian warrior Ryam owes a debt of honor to his men and their leader. The stubborn, butterfly sword-wielding Ai Li must honor her family by marrying the man they have chosen for her, but when she discovers he intends to betray her father, she escapes in order to warn them. The honorable warrior and outcast is the only one who will help her.Lushly described, this story sweeps the reader away to the Tang Dynasty and into the lives of these characters, wondering how they can possibly overcome all the obstacles in their path. less

Beautiful, seductive, and raw. A novel you can read again and again. Honor is a virtue.
