review 1: This book started off great. I found the original history of Mario interesting. However, the middle of the book became less interesting, perhaps because I was a teenager in the midst of a lot of these system wars. The end of the book was just plain boring. I don't know if that's because it was truly boring of if I read too much of this book in a single setting. Either way, towards the end I was just tuning out.The most obnoxious part about this book was the constant jokes and puns. They were bad, they didn't add to the book, they distracted. The other major part I hated was the insertion of pop psychology to explain why gamers didn't take to games or characters. The psychology seemed flawed and came across more as the author's personal opinions than true psychology.Finally... more, this book is poorly subtitled. It's not really about how Nintendo conquered America, it's about how Mario when through phases of ups and downs.Oh, and how can you mention the N64 and not talk about Goldeneye?!?
review 2: An interesting look into the history of Nintendo (and Mario's influence on gaming), but there were a surprising number of inaccuracies. Most of these were minor details only a nerd like me would recognize, but for someone trying to write such an accurate history of one of the medium's most influential players, you would think he'd be more careful to make sure everything is correct before publishing. less
