review 1: If you have a cat, you should totally give this a look. I could relate to 90% of the cartoons in this book because they fall into the category of "It's hilarious because its painfully true." The whole gift book is made up of comic strips that chronicle cat life and cover real world issues such as "The Death Machine Called the Vacuum Cleaner" and "It's 3 AM, So Wake Up and Feed Me You Stupid Human." It's clever, observant, relatable, and adorable. I love my cat Phoebe and it was so easy to imagine her being the star of these cartoons. :) I thank my public library for showing me this little gem.
review 2: To confess, I have never owned a cat or even lived with one, but cats do seem to be popular in the circles I run in (i.e., board gamers, writers, librarians, et
... morec.) so I still find myself exposed to the cat culture which has taken over large swathes of the internet in the last few years. Sure, I like cats but I guess I could not call myself a cat person, in spite of somewhat identifying with them. Jeffrey Brown certainly draws some charming cats, doing all of the charming cat things I’ve seen my friends cats do or YouTube videos. Very informative about life with cats, told with Brown's trademark art and cuteness. These seem to be mainly anecdotes of his own two cats and the funny/weird things they get themselves into. There is a lot of meowing. It helps me understand what it is about these odd little creatures that appeals to me. I must also note I read this book as an e-book on my iPhone, and I would not recommend it. While I have enjoyed reading text books on my mobile device, I think comics might be a little different. I felt that Brown's detailed, colorful, quirk-filled drawings lost a lot of their charm crammed in on my iPhone screen. It might be better on a larger screen, I think I might stick to print for my comics from now on. less
