review 1: At first it was hard to keep reading. The subject matter is tough. And it was hard to imagine how she could find a resolution for the ending of the book. Then I really wanted to reject her resolution, but... Like some of her other books, the more time has passed (2 weeks now) since I finished it, the more I like it. I've given it the rare full-five-stars. The second of her books I've done that with. Or maybe the third. I still have a couple of books by her to read.
review 2: Real life events in Portland Oregon inspired Jennie Shortridge to write When She Flew. In 2004 a former Marine was discovered living with his 12 year old daughter in Portland’s Forest Park. The young girl was clean, articulate, polite, and doing very well academically being hom
... moree schooled by her father. She was evaluated and there was no evidence of abuse. The police officer in charge of their case found the man work on a horse farm. It looked like a good ending was in sight when the pair were spooked by the media hubbub and fled. Shortridge was intrigued. She changes the names of places in her work of fiction, but the book is true to the essence of the real life drama of a father and daughter getting on quite well in an unorthodox manner. When She Flew tells the story through the perspective of a police officer. It is a fascinating book, it will make you think. less

The book is based on a true story, so I guess I shouldn't be too critical of the ending.

Not for me. Even though based on true story too unrealistic and sappy.

Gripping read. The end was just a little overdramatic...

A quick read...moms and daughters, veterans, PTSD, etc.
