review 1: I listened to the first 7 chapters (of 21) and found the two main characters frustrating and not especially sympathetic despite their difficult circumstances. They both also carried storylines and perspectives that seemed bleak at best. The book raised interesting questions for our club discussion (ie How would you face a terminal diagnosis? What does it mean to fail well? Is Russia really like this??), but I don't have any desire to devote more hours to finishing it. I'd probably give it 3 stars but won't actually rate it since I didn't finish it.
review 2: An amazing book. So well written. Her descriptions of the sky, people and places made you see these things in your mind. Not a happy or uplifting book, though. Why do people do what they do? Have you ever a

The story follows a young women who has watched her beloved father suffer a fatal and debilitating disease while knowing her life will have the same end as her father's. She finds a letter he has written to a Russian chess champion. She decides to leave everything behind her and travel to Russia to find him. Since he is running a political campaign against Putin, his life is uncertain. Many dissidents in Russia were know to have been killed because of their stance against Putin and his government. They become friends and colleagues as they work together on this political campaign. less

can be very slow, but interesting to learn about Russian history in the 1980s or so

Compelling story, but what sets this book apart is the writing quality. Superb!

Death ... hmmm . . . a little pretentious, but worth the read.
