review 1: A strong four and a half stars! I got this as an ARC from netgalley, but only after I'd already purchased it. Either way, I always try to give the most honest review I possibly can. This one had the promise of being action packed from the first moment I read the blurb. I was not disappointed. All of the favorite characters from the past stopped by for at least a cameo, including Violet, Warren, Eva, Cooper, and JoJo. I'd have loved to see more of some of them, but I'm guessing they'll be back in the next book. Lots of foreshadowing at the end of the book, making me want the next book RIGHT NOW! Gin was her normal butt kicking self in this book, though she definitely had to face a fear or two. As that she's such a control freak, that's hard for her. Almost straight away she ... moreand Bria got into a huge argument that lasted through the majority of the book. But luckily everything worked out on that front. Bria and Catalina, a Pork Pit waitress, play huge parts in this book, as they, and Gin, try to fight "The King of Southtown" and his new drug, Burn. As the name implies, it causes the user's body to feel like it's on fire. Doesn't sound like fun to me, but to each their own I suppose. The biggest problem with the drug is that it affects all races, giants, dwarves, vampires, elementals and humans. But it hits elementals the hardest, sometimes, most times, killing them. Gin decides to take out the supplier after she and Catalina witness him killing one of his dealers because Gin kicked his rear, along with his two vampire bodyguards. Guilt, the great motivator for Gin. If you are a fan of the Elemental Assassin series, this is one of the best in the series. There seemed to be a lot less repetition, which is something that has bothered me a lot in past books, but there seemed to be more excessive descriptions in this one than in the past. Even with these slightly annoying habits of Ms Estep, this is one of my favorites in the series. I don't know that someone should pick the series up at this point, but if you've read the previous books, or even just some of the previous books, I'd recommend this with extreme enthusiasm. I would have read it sooner, but I waited for a friend to get it from her library so we could read it together, which actually made it even better, because it showed me points that I would have missed on my own. Hopefully we can do it again with the next book.
review 2: A resounding "meh" from me. Wasn't terrible, it's just feeling stale these days. We see the same thing happen in every book, with little variation. As usual, things could have been wrapped up neatly with a gunshot, but Gin insists on showboating. I also found the writing inconsistent, with Gin going from completely out of it, to biting someone til they bleed while simultaneously being witty, to being not able to stand up. And the "reveal" at the end was far from being revealing, after having been hinted at for the past couple books. less
