review 1: Gin Blanco, better known to some as the Spider, had all intents and purposes of hanging up her knives and living the quiet life running the Pork Pit instead of killing people. Yeah, that didn't work out so well. Retirement is boring compared to the danger of assassination. Gin gave it a good few months, but the Spider is back. I can say with Gin Blanco, killing is in her blood. Not that she enjoys it, mind you. Sometimes she does, but it's more a way of life at this point. Why bother with a feud when death is so much more efficient (not to mention, permanent?). The Spider will always have revenge on her mind and sometimes, she even does some pro-bono work in order to help others out, like she did in Web of Lies.Violet Fox comes into the Pork Pit looking for the Tin... more Man. Gin is instantly suspicious: only people who hired Fletcher knew him by his work moniker. Unbeknownst to Violet, Fletcher has been dead for 2 months. Being the good soul that she is, Gin takes it upon herself to help Violet. Little does she know, Violet and the Foxes have history with Tin Man, which is what brought Violet to Gin's door in the first place. Violet and her grandfather are being bullied and threatened by a local dwarf, a hustler in the mining industry. The dwarf wants Warren's land for his own and being that Warren will never part with it, it looks like death is the only option to gaining the land. Which the dwarf is well-prepared to do, both to Violet and Warren. Gin travels to Warren's home alongside Violet to scope out the situation. What she doesn't plan on seeing there is Donovan Caine. Conflicted, pious, stick in the mud, no-fun Donovan Caine.Donovan Caine is starting to get on my nerves. Well really, his relationship with Gin is. They are both conflicted with the other, yet their attraction can't be denied. On opposite sides of the team - a detective and an assassin, they find themselves working together more than they don't. And the reason Donovan Caine bothers me so much is because he has such a low opinion of Gin, a hired killer, yet he has no problem breaking the law alongside Gin, a hired killer. Listen, Donovan Caine. You're either better than her or you're not. What you cannot do, Donovan Caine, is align yourself with her and proceed to judge her. That's just downright nasty, Caine. He's certainly a character I love to hate and I'm hoping he sticks around for awhile because he makes things kind of exciting. This time around, I'm noticing this series has quite a bit of repetition. From the phrases Gin says (Mmm. Sloppy, sloppy. Get dead.), to the way the narrative keeps going back to things that have already been told. I get that books often do a quick recap of events that may have been important in the prior book, but usually recapping once is enough. I am finding that Estep recaps more than once. And not only that, she makes her characters get overly focused on certain things and then said character dwells in depth over and over again, in this case it was Fletcher and the folder. Again, once is enough. I sincerely hope that in future books, the repetition is phased out because it really does get annoying after a time.Really looking forward to the third book in this series, Venom. Things are looking quite interesting concerning Gin and Mab Monroe and that particular story arc is bound to be explosive :)
review 2: The second title in Ms. Estep's well-crafted Elemental Assassin series continues the story of Gin Blanco, now retired assassin. This time around, Gin finds herself being threatened by Jake McAllister, son of notorious attorney Jonah McAllister, after she foils his robbery attempt at the Pork Pit. In addition, Gin feels compelled to help Warren Fox, long-time friend of her deceased foster father. With so much on Gin's plate, the assassin in Gin's soul isn't resting easy.WEB OF LIES picks up only a month or so after the conclusion of the first book. I am pleased with the amount of character growth in Gin as she learns more about her past and reaches deep within to see her true self. I really enjoyed the main plot line which follows Gin and her attempts to help Warren Fox. I can tell that with each book, I will slowly start to see the Gin I know and love from reading the later books. One thing that did start to annoy me after while was the amount of repetition in the story: small phrases here and there, names and events, repeated sometimes three, four, and five times throughout the book. I did not reduce my rating of the book because of it (this time), but it was very noticeable. I don't know if there is actually more repetition in this book than subsequent titles, or if I'm only noticing it because I'm listening to the book, but I look forward to listening to future titles to see if I notice the same thing. One thing I absolutely loved was the dynamic between Gin and Owen Grayson. Having read future titles and knowing what becomes of both individuals, I had a smile on my face every time Mr. Grayson made an appearance. The narration of the title by Lauren Fortgang was once again spot on. I found Gin's voice to be exactly as I imagined, ranging from hard edged assassin, to warn-out fighter, to introspective soul. I especially enjoyed how the narrator altered her voice for every character. I found that Owen Grayson is my new favorite (other than Gin). My Rating for the story: A-My Rating for the narration: A less

The storytelling is excellent, although I'm still struggling with my perceived absence of emotion.
