review 1: I really enjoyed it - yes it had plenty of sci-fi tropes, and was a bit predictable. I can't really hold that against Wells, because, frankly, the story went right where I wanted it go. :) Some of the conflict was resolved a little too easily (if I was her editor, I would have pushed her to build a little more tension before the story resolved). It is still an impressive debut novel, and Ms. Wells is a great story teller. I will definitely read the sequel - this book is begging to be turned into a epic series of follow-ons. I am very interested to see how Jennifer Boehner Wells grows as an author and continues to build out this universe!
review 2: This book has it all! Clumsy writing! Bad science! Weak character development! Dumb, over-used cliches! If you'r
... moree hungry for a book that un-ironically uses the Roswell/Area 51 incident as "backstory" and looks like it was never proof-read, this is for you!Seriously though don't read this book. The writing is TERRIBLE, both technically and stylistically. And the story and details are deeply dumb--aliens using Linnean taxonomy, a "deep genetic language" that is mostly half-assed Latin, NASA scientists who are unbelievably laughable.Steer clear. There's nothing interesting or new here. less

Haven't read a good sci-fi in a while and enjoyed this. Great to have a female main character.
