review 1: I love short stories. More so, I love linked short stories, especially when they are loosely tied as these. All the tales revolve around the town of Bakerton, although some of them are removed in time and place (but still tie back, I promise). Haigh is a marvelous writer and I admire the way she makes us care about her character in short pieces. We dip in and out of lives, and I would have happily read twice as many stories.
review 2: I enjoy most of the books written by Jennifer Haigh, and this was another. It is a collection of stories about certain people living in Bakerton, a former mining town. The town struggles to survive after the closing of the mines. Occasionally, the stories jump around between the past and present but it isn't difficult to track the... morem. Haigh's writing is picturesque and the scenes she creates definitely hold one's attention without becoming too romantic or maudlin. less
