May Amelia
review 1: Lexile/Grade Level: 690 / 3-7Length: 4 discs Summary: This is the second May Amelia book by Jennifer Holm. She is a 12 year old Finnish girl living on a farm in Washington State in 1900. She is also the only girl in her large family which displeases her father. This books tells about the roles woman played in society during this time and the hardships of just surviving.Recommendations or Comments: With so much background explaining the life and times in WA, I was surprised to learn this was May’s second book. I would have liked to get into the SISU portion of the book much sooner. The last few chapters were the heart of the story. Maybe as a younger reader and not knowing what life was like back then I wouldn’t of minded the first 10 chapters. I enjoyed the author n... moreotes at the end telling readers this story was inspired by her great grandfather. If you enjoy Little House on the Prairie you will probably enjoy this book too. review 2: I listened to the entire book while gardening and enjoyed hearing more about May Amelia and her family. They endure more trials in their homesteading in Washington in 1900 and the themes are little more mature, although they are handled well for juvenile readers. Ms. Holm writes well for young audiences and makes her heroine tough but lovable, flawed but generous. It was a touching story and a great follow-up to the Newbery Honor book. less
