Zoroastrian tradition considers a dead body (in addition to cut hair and nail parings) to be nasu, unclean, i.e. potential pollutants. Specifically, the corpse demon (Avestan: nasu.daeva) was believed to rush into the body and contaminate everything it came into contact with, hence the Vendidad (an ecclesiastical code “given against the demons”) has rules for disposing of the dead as safely as possible.
To preclude the pollution of earth or fire (Zam and Atar respectively), the bodies of the dead are placed atop a tower and so exposed to the sun and to scavenging birds. Thus, “putrefaction with all its concomitant evils… is most effectually prevented.”
Around 10 years ago, it was noticed that slowly the Birds are dying off. Not many of them were left to consume the dead bodies (which started rotting away)… So, the Parsees had to change this mode of dealing with their dead.. BUT, they were curious to know why a Custom that existed easily for hundreds of years, slowly had to be suspended??? They did Autopsies on the Dead Birds (they were dying in huge numbers)..What was the Culprit??? PARACETAMOL (PANADOL) / CROCIN or METACIN…!! People have started consuming pain-killers a decade ago, Panadol STAYS in the Liver for a Long Time… It ultimately accumulated in the Birds’ systems, they could not cope with it and started dying ! The few surviving birds are often unable to fully consume the bodies; Parsi communities in India were evaluating captive breeding of vultures and the use of “solar concentrators” (which are essentially large mirrors) to accelerate decomposition. Some have been forced to resort to burial, as the solar collectors work only in clear weather. Vultures used to dispose of a body in minutes, and no other method has proved fully effective. Following the rapid expansion of the Indian cities, the “tower of silence” buildings are today in or near population centers, but separated from the metropolitan bustle by gardens or forests. In Parsi Zoroastrian tradition, exposure of the dead is also considered to be an individual’s final act of charity, providing the birds with what would otherwise be destroyed. Long-Term Effects of Painkillers…. There are a number of unpleasant side effects associated with painkiller abuse. Mild side effects include nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, usually caused by the way the drug interacts with opioid receptors along the digestive tract. Value your health, value your life, THINK TWICE before you easily pop that familiar pill into your mouth again. Please try and avoid pain-killers as much as possible, also try to make people around you aware !! Advertisements Share this:- More
