review 1: Anyone who grew up in Indiana in the late 80's should read this book. The author uses personal notes to accurately detail her high school experience. Boys, popularity, teachers, Esprit and Aqua Net are all a part of this charming and real account of her life in Richmond, IN. You feel as if you picked up her diary from 1986 when you read this book. At times it made me laugh out loud and other times it made me think about my own actions in high school and the relationships I had with my friends, parents and teachers. If you are looking for a book about what she learned from her high school experience and how she would change her choices if she could go back this isn't the book for you. She is simply sharing her story of her four years of high school and it's a great read... more. Well done!
review 2: For a complete change of pace, a friend (who went to high school in the midwest in the 80s) gave me this memoir of going to the high school in the midwest in the 80s. It was fine pre-bedtime reading (and a nice break from my WWII survival books of late), and seems to accurately portray the meaningless drama of high school life and some fun tidbits from the 80s. For me though, it really fell short. It read like the inside back cover of your senior yearbook -- funny at the time, but a lot less so now. Instead of the author pining away about how unpopular she was (big lies - it's clear she fit in with lots of different crowds), she could have dealt with the issue of her gay best friend trying to figure out that he's gay, or maybe about the librarian's suicide, or about her parents' divorce, or maybe about discovering yourself and who you are in more than a few sentences in order to save space for naming (both first and last names) of all of the cool kids at Richmond High School. It made me wonder if any of my high school classmates are planning to write books like this one. Would that be more interesting? Yikes. less
