Velva Jean
review 1: Like her previous books, this one is an entertaining romp, an adventure story with a girl heroine who is larger than life but still just the girl next door. The second half, the murder mystery tale, is all plot, action, and suspense -- with the requisite happy ending. But the first half contains some seriously good writing as it recreates the Hollywood of the MGM postwar years through the eyes of a perky ingenue with some intriguing history behind her.
review 2: The first book in the series, Velva Jean Learns to Drive, was the best, but they have all been very good. ... morethought, "Velva Jean Goes to Hollywood would have been a better title." Then, the book took a turn and became a pretty darn good murder mystery. I wonder how far Jennifer Niven will take Velva Jean? Perhaps she should quit while she's ahead and the story is not stale, but maybe she'll surprise me! less
