review 1: What's special about this picture book is that the bird in the illustrations appears via negative space. The book appeals to kids because of its simple story question, “What's better: fitting in, blending in, or seeming to disappear altogether?” Parents will be fascinated by the intellectual link between negative space in art and fitting into a community. I wish it had a better title, something that expressed the true uniqueness of this book.
review 2: Everyone is different in one way or another, and those differences should be celebrated. This funny little bird is not like the others, and he goes through his life and tries to become like them so he won't be made fun of. Instead, he learns why it is so good to be himself and he embraces it. In so doing,
... more he makes friends who appreciate his differences, and that makes him happy. It has a deeper meaning than at first meets the eye and can spur a good amount of dialogic reading. less

The story is much better in the original French version! Pity that the US editor didn't ask the author to translate it herself!

Good story. I love the illustrations most of all though. Full review to come.
