review 1: Jenny Han’s Clara Lee and the Apple Pie dream is a brilliant story about a no-nonsense Korean-American third grader who lives in small town America. One night, Clara Lee has a frightening dream, in which her grandfather dies. She shares this terrible dream with her grandfather, who informs her that it is an actually Good Luck dream. Clara Lee hopes that the good luck will help her become Little Miss Apple Pie in the town’s Apple Blossom Festival. She is having a great day until Dionne Gregory shakes her confidence and her Good Luck crumbles. Will Clara Lee get her confidence back and become the next Little Miss Apple Pie? Clara Lee and the Apple Pie Dream is a contemporary realistic fiction book for several different reasons. This book has very realistic and relatable ... morecharacters, plot, and setting. Clara Lee is a very relatable girl, especially for minority students, and she encounters situations that are very common for most children her age. Additionally, this book discusses the transformation of a scared young girl who develops confidence with the help of her family and friends that help her become the town’s next Little Miss Apple Pie. Lastly, Clara has a clear goal, she wants to be Little Miss Apple Pie, and goals are another characteristic of contemporary realistic fiction. Furthermore, this book is a good text to use when teaching students they are not alone in their situations, problems, and goals. Moreover, this book will help teach empathy and broaden the students’ horizons. This book is great for third through sixth graders.
