review 1: I read books largely because I want to be entertained. I don't expect every book to grab me by the throat and not let go but I expect to want to follow the characters through to the end. Although I appreciate the careful way in which this author strung her words together (there are beautiful passages), the overall message - apathy is everywhere and it just might kill you - left me not giving a damn. Ironic?
review 2: This is a beautifully written book, I can understand why reviewers called the writing lyrical. And the play on glass, water, cold, and hot really worked to show the character's emotions. However, the book seems dark, almost dreary, with a main character who is almost narcicisstic and unable to feel. Saw the Lewis/ Birdie characters as being the l... moreight/ dark (hot/ cold) opposites. Interesting read about waiting and leaving, and finding. less
