review 1: Princess Wilha, the Masked Princess, ran away from her throne, and her secret, long-hidden twin Elara took her place--and has spent the last year with her the man who was supposed to be her sister's betrothed, the prince of Kyrencia. Wilha is enjoying her freedom, but Elara isn't too happy trying to learn everything she missed--and the kingdom is suffering under their brother's rule. Andrei, influenced by an adviser, has revealed the twins' deception--and now both are seen as traitors to both countries. They will have to escape the army of their brother, the rebels who would use them to their own ends--and decide who will be the next queen. The people need a ruler who is invested in the kingdom--but the whole story began because a sibling tried to overthrow a ruler. The y... moreoungest twin should have been killed at birth, but now they have to choose somehow who is more suited to rule. But both of them want the crown...This book reminded me of the separated twin studies, where psychologists compared adult twins, finding a great deal in common. Elara and Wilha are very similar--and since the similarities run to stubbornness, inflexibility, and determination, they clash a great deal. Neither of them is especially likable, one rather weak, the other cruel, and neither respecting the other's strengths. The plot rolls along nicely, and there's some romance along the many rebellion, fights, and flights from violence. Though the story is a little cluttered with players, leading to some fairly thin characterization in places, the twins themselves are pretty well fleshed out. A light fantasy adventure about family, identity, and what makes a good ruler.
review 2: I looked forward to this book and couldn't wait. I enjoyed the beginning and the middle of the book to no end! It was fabulous! However, about the last 3/4 to the ending was not what I was hoping for. I'm not sure why this book didn't fall into the love category. I thought Elara really got the worst end of this story line and she didn't get to develop much, she seemed to be stuck in the angry, silent girl, instead of growing she just tended to become a little shallow, yet she still got her way. Meanwhile, Wilha became more of a favorite in this book, yet I still wasn't happy with her. She seemed to finally get a backbone and grow somewhat, yet she was just as sneaky as Elara but that seemed to be overlooked. I liked the twists and the letter from the mom, yet thought Elara didn't develop into the character or person needed throughout the book, yet so much for the first book she was fabulous as trying to make the best and being the sister everyone needed, and this book she became selfish and self-centered more so. I really wanted to love this book, but felt the ending was cliche with a lack of development. I got tired of the whining and how everyone was wanting the crown; the whole point was to have them rule together to balance the palace out, and honestly, I hoped for that, to show them both grow enough to be able to grow the kingdom with the twins together. Oh well, it was an enjoyable book, and for the most part, I really did enjoy it, just wanted more from the ending really, and didn't agree with the wrap up of it all. less
