review 1: I love this graphic novel about young people fucking the patriarchy. A young black princess recruits her female guard dragon to help her break out of her princess tower and rescue her seven sisters from their own towers. And on the way she meets another young girl (who is half dwarf) who is first female blacksmith. And also her brother is bucking the masculinity expected of him by his father by being into poetry instead of fighting. Also it's sarcastic and hilarious. Yes, read it!
review 2: This was so great. It takes the standard fairy tale tropes - fair maiden trapped in a tower guarded by a dragon until a prince rescues her - and then just flips them all. The princess is a black girl (with a major independent streak), and she decides she doesn't want to be r... moreescued by a prince, and rescues herself by making a deal with the dragon. The basic set-up of the princess being the one doing the rescuing reminds me a lot of The Paper Bag Princess, one of my all-time favourite books. This one has a lot of fun with the set-up. There is an issue dedicated to making fun of the "armour" worn by Women Warriors, with a female blacksmith showing off to the sceptical princess "armour" based on Red Sonja, Wonder Woman, Xena and a couple others. It's funny, but it does go on a bit long. The blacksmith girl is hilarious, though. The book is full of humour. The art is also fun and cartoony.This is a great book, appropriate for kids but enjoyable by anyone. I would definitely recommend it to parents who want their kids to have an appreciation for female and minority protagonists. less
