review 1: Having seen some of the reviews for this book, I did start it with a bit of trepidation. However, I actually quite enjoyed it! I picked it up as one of the DSP October tweetaways. On a sliding scale it'd be between a 3 and4* for me.A lot of comments focussed on the pov changes but this didnt actually bother me too much - it did help to separate Jeremy's story (first person) from the background story and character info of the others (Mark, Tom, Chris etc in third person). Having said that, I didnt particulary like Jeremy, he seemed like a spoiled boy instead of an early 30's man, always storming off. Maybe more of a build up on the reasons for him heading to the Bridge where he first meets Mark would have made him more likeable. I did enjoy the murder/mystery elements, th... moreough would a police force not investigate a murder on the parents say so? I did waver between a few suspects and thought the ending was good, but could have been tightened up a bit - would the killer have really tried to shoot one person and on only getting their arm, stop shooting? There were a few loose ends (Miranda for one) that I'd have liked to see what happened but maybe book 2 answers some of theseI tend not to analyse books too much, and I did enjoy this one. The pacing was good throughout, maybe slowing a bit at the end, and I thought it was well written. Certainly hasn't put me off reading more by the author.
review 2: I really wanted to like this book.Even though it jumps from 1st person to 3rd and often within the same scene, I wanted to like it. Even though the entire plot was transparent before I was 30 pages in. The idea behind "The Saint of San Francisco" is a great one but the characters were poorly developed and aside from a couple of sentences early on and an ever-present rosary, there was never really much of a basis for giving the main character the title nickname. In fairness, I gave this book a fair shake and read it from beginning to end even though I knew what the ending would be. I kept hoping against hope that I was being duped into believing I knew what was happening when in reality I was just duped into finishing it. less
