review 1: A welcome biography of the idiosyncratic band and a celebration of '80s/'90s zine culture. Yo La Tengo is a band of music obsessives that somehow doesn't sound like anything you've ever heard ever. Jarnow provides a look inside their low-key but serious working methods and places YLT inside a warm, collegial community of fellow musicians. The book also does a good job of putting the arc of the band's career in relief against changes in the music business and in urban life itself. Essential for YLT fans and highly recommended for music nuts.

... moresse Jarnow examines indie rock's deep tentacles, winding along America in clubs and fanzines. As a former college DJ, I appreciated the trip back in time, as well as learning new facts about one of my favorite bands. Mostly I enjoyed the marked determination of Ira Kaplan, Georgia Hubley, and James McNew, among many others. When it seems everything is for sale, a few ideals hold true. Thank goodness for Yo La Tengo, and Jesse Jarnow, for reminding that integrity still exists. less
