review 1: This is a tragic story of a young girl, Lorca, and her cries to be loved, noticed, and valued by her mother. She searches for a way to ultimately "win" this love and value from her mother in the form of a recipe for long, lost Iranian dish her mother had years before. Lorca's search puts her on a collision course with Victoria. She is an lonely, elderly woman who needs Lorca as much as Lorca needs her. The food imagery in the book is wonderful and while the ending was a bit too pat the story will charm you.
review 2: I was so pleasantly surprised by this book. Based on the very mixed reviews, i did not have the highest of hopes but decided to give it a shot. About half way through, I found I could not put it down and ended up staying up til 1 am to finish it! ... more I thought it was a beautiful story, with characters who were so flawed yet so human, annoyed with them one minute and yet wanting to wrap my arms around them the next. And I thought her writing, her language, was just lovely. Very happy to have taken a chance on this book. less
