review 1: Bramble gets tired of walking in circles giving riding lessons. She and her owner search for the right family to take her home. Maggie wants a horse. She and Bramble get along well. Maggie takes Bramble home. Together, they explore and bond. Finally, Maggie goes to bed. Bramble is afraid of being alone. Maggie learns to keep Bramble company by camping near her stall. This book would be appropriate for independent readers between seven and nine years old. Readers that enjoy contemporary realistic fiction, stories about people and their pets and horses may enjoy this book. It would be appropriate to help children develop narrative skills and transition from picture books to chapter books.
review 2: Bramble the horse is tired of going around and around in circles a
... moret horseback riding lessons. When she stops listening to her rider, Mrs. Blenkinsop, the riding teacher, decides that maybe it's time for Bramble to have a person of her own to have fun with. Maggie is riding in the car with her parents when she sees a sign advertising a "Free Horse" and can't believe her good luck! But Bramble is picky about who should be her new human, and Maggie knows she should be picky about getting a horse. Will Bramble and Maggie be the right fit for each other?I gave this four stars because I really liked it as an early chapter book. It's definitely a simple story and nothing very surprising happens, but it has its funny moments and any horse lover is going to love the idea of getting a free horse and keeping it in your backyard. It also has color illustrations, which may add to the appeal for some readers.I would recommend this for first through third graders who are starting to grow out of easy readers. This is a chapter book but just barely. Readalikes might be Bink & Gollie or the Horse Crazy series. less
