Amelia Rules!
review 1: I started reading these when I was 13 and I still love them. They remind me of being a little kid again and are funny while have serious messages. Amelia is a great character: she's precocious and really a bit of a smart-Alec, but understanding and sensitive. Tanner is like a rockstar Yoda in a belly-showing shirt. Amelia's friends are unique and funny in every way. Her parents are kind and nurturing, without being totally perfect. These books charming and heartwarming, with beautiful artwork. It's so sad that this series has ended.RIP Amelia RulesRead these! Seriously they're great! :)
review 2: Jimmy Gownley’s graphic novel, Amelia Rules, True Things (adults Don't Want Kids to Know), is the sixth volume of the Amelia Rules series. In this volume, Amelia mu
... morest face and deal with “tween” issues such as change, disappointment, promises and her every changing relationship with friends, family, and boys. This 2011 Will Eisner Comic Industry Nominee for Best Publication for Kids, is geared toward children grades 4-6. Amelia’s story begins with her 11th birthday party where her Aunt Tanner (a former rock star) performs a special birthday song written just for Amelia. The story presents different aspects of growing up from the perspective of an 11 year old; which allows young readers to make a connection not only with the character but also the issues young people face. Some of the issues Amelia faces are: her first crush, a broad spectrum of emotions, working through her parents’ divorce, and facing her mom and her failing grade report. Gownley does a wonderful job of expressing Amelia’s anxieties and embarrassments in a realistic setting. For example, Amelia sees a therapist to help her deal with the divorce of her parents and the anger she harbors which allows her to also deal with the changes in her relationship with her parents and her friends. Amelia is also exposed to the element of verbal confrontation (fighting) between her parents and her mom and aunt. Amelia admires her aunt and respects her for always being honest…even when Amelia doesn’t understand the meaning. Amelia’s story is entertaining, but also allows the reader to stop and think about what's important in life. Gownley’s cleaver dialogue paired with interesting character designs allow this graphic novel to appeal to a large range of audiences…especially the female audiences. Amelia’s character is tough, independent, and thoughtful. When faced with dilemmas like the awkward and embarrassing moments with her crush Kyle she preservers and deals with both her emotions and the disappointments life sometimes delivers, making this graphic novel a must read. less
