review 1: Outo kirja. Kirjailija on kirjoittanut menehtyneestä itsestään ulkopuolisen henkilön näkökulmasta elämäkerran, joka koostuu pääasiassa kirjailijan elämässä jollain tapaa vaikuttaneiden henkilöiden "haastatteluista". Toisin sanoen kirjailija kertoo tuntemiensa henkilöiden suilla olettamiaan heidän ajatuksiaan itsestään, tai siis öö... Takakannen perusteella kuulosti kiinnostavammalta idealta ja asetelmalta kuin sitten käytännössä oli, aika pitkäveteistä kerrontaa ja eri "haastateltavien" kertomukset toistivat itseään ja jauhoivat samaa paljolti. Vähän jäi sellainen olo, etten toisaalta ihan vaan ehkä tajunnut tässä jotain. Joka tapauksessa, en juuri pitänyt.
review 2: After glancing at the front cover, I opened this book up to ... morethe inside flap and read that it was about a biographer researching Coetzee's life. I almost put it back, but then I flipped back to the front where I thought I'd read it was fiction. Yes, JM Coetzee wrote a fictional book about someone researching his life after he was dead. Pretty gutsy, but I figured it would be awesome. And it was. The only slightly bad thing about this book, written in a series of conversations between the biographer and people who knew John Coetzee when he was a young man, for me, is that the first section with Margot stood out as a clear favorite. You like a book to get better as it goes, but for whatever reason the first portion interested me more. There was a lengthy conversation between Margot and Coetzee about why he writes that resonated with me quite strongly. less
