review 1: One of the most unusual books I've ever read; I found it strange and unsettling. There were parts, around the middle of the story, that totally lost me. There were long, seemingly endless passages on philosophy, the most annoying of these was a long ramble about whether a poo was still yours once it has left your body. Still, this is brave and inventive and I'm glad I persisted to the end. Apart from being about making a fresh start and new beginnings, I'm still not quite sure what it all meant. Strangely though, it's stayed with me for a long time.
review 2: I was sick with worry over little David through the first third of this book. Coetzee's back to his old tricks--this felt much more like "Waiting for the Barbarians" than any of his other works I've read--
... morein that it's more of a novel of ideas. Characters are on something of a blank backdrop, having philosophical and sociological discussions. I was engrossed by the second third of the book, and somewhat saddened by the obviousness of the metaphors in the last third. It was much more entertaining having to work to suss out the many meanings Coetzee might have been offering us in the first part than being constantly dabbled with direct Biblical metaphor in the last 50 pages. Most interesting was the ways Coetzee explored the divides between capitalism and socialism, monotheism and Buddhism in the beginning. Simon gives over to the strength of little David, as do all, eventually, in the story. Does this make the book deeply problematic or deeply accurate? Not sure. less

‘What exactly do you mean by real? Surely there is such a thing as overvaluing the biological.’
