review 1: Admittedly not for everyone, this book hooked me. A mostly dialogue driven parable filled with philosophical questions, the narrative follows David and his guardian Simon on a quest to find David's mother in a strange new land. Eventually they find Ines, who is somehow chosen as David's mother even though she is not his biological mother. David's refusal to learn properly causes the government of the new land to want to send him to a special school. If this sounds strange, it is. But I read it quickly, because Coetzee's language is always compelling and the questions the book poses are interesting (although sometimes a bit facile) The ending is far too abrupt for my tastes and feels like the author didn't know how to end the book. But the journey was still worth ta... moreking.
review 2: Heel ongewoon verhaal, waar ik niet echt uitgekomen ben ... maar ik ben blijkbaar niet de enige! Een man (Simon), een kind (David) en later ook een vrouw (Ines) in een soort utopische socialistische maatschappij, die een nieuw leven beginnen met nieuwe namen, Spaans als voertaal en heel veel goede wil maar weinig passie . Er zijn natuurlijk parallellen met het leven van Jezus, maar dan toch ook weer niet echt. Keurig geschreven en soms zelfs grappig, net iets te filosofisch voor mijn niet-filosofische geest. less
