The Powers of Love
review 1: Fun idea, but lacking somehow overallWarning: This review might contain what some people consider SPOILERS. Rating: 7/10PROS: - The premise is interesting. Who hasn’t wished at some point that he or she had super powers? And who wouldn’t want to get said powers from having sex?- The details of the paranormal plotline are amusing. I especially liked the descriptions of how different sexual positions lead to different superpowers: “lying on his back on the edge of the bed, with Matt between his legs, holding his knees apart…made Vic’s skin turn a delicate shade of blue that matched his eyes and kept him confined to the house until the power wore off.”- I’m a sucker for macho guys who also have a prodigious soft side, and that’s very much the case with Vic. He... more’s pierced and muscled and tattooed, yet he’s sweet and believes in romance and fairy tale endings.CONS:- The descriptions of the bedroom scenes are a little too flowery for me at times. Example: “His lips found one hard nipple, dark and succulent like a chocolate kiss.” Considering how much of the book is dedicated to this aspect of the men’s lives, the flowery language started getting to me.- There are some major developments in the men’s lives that are either entirely skipped over (an author’s note at the beginning of the book says this: “readers interested in learning more about the problems Matt had with his ex-boyfriend, as referenced in With This Ring, will want to check out The Bonds of Love [a separate novel] for the full scoop”) or merely hinted at.Overall comments: I loved the idea here, but the execution fell flat for me. The stories have a sensational feel to them, with descriptions that remind me of the over-the-top Harlequin romances I read as a teenager.
review 2: Vic Braunson is a bus driver who sees a gorgeous man at the gym. Unfortunately, the man is already dating one of his co-workers. Not the type of guy to muscle in on someone else's action, Vic looks but doesn't approach. He can't help feeling, however, that there may be some chemistry between him and the handsome Matt diLorenzo. After circumstances bring them together, Matt and Vic finally get the chance to become friends with the possibility of more. When they finally consummate their relationship, Vic discovers that he has interesting new abilities after every love-making session. This story was a bit corny from a plot perspective but I liked Vic and Matt a lot. The biggest issue I had was from a length standpoint. I just don't feel that this story was long enough to properly develop the characters and I definitely felt like the story ended very abruptly. I would read the next books in the series if I can get them for free because I like Vic and Matt, but I'm not sure I will spend money on this particular series. less
