review 1: This picture book is a beautifully positive introduction to loss. The story explores an array of ideas, celebrating uniqueness and special relationships. The story makes way for wonderful discussions about how we value one another and what makes us special, as well as equipping children with ways to deal with loss of any kind. The vibrant and evocative illustrations draw the reader into the emotions of the story. This is a wonderful story for children and grown-ups of any age!
review 2: I am in love with the illustrations in this book - extremely eye-catching and able to get the attention of even the most easily distracted children. It is a very simple story of a special rabbit who is much like other rabbits in that he enjoys doing 'rabbity' things like hopping
... more and eating, yet what makes him unique is his love for many wonderful 'unrabbity' things like painting and making music. One day rabbit 'goes away', and leaves the rest of the rabbits and all of the wood feeling sad. However, by remembering all the good times with rabbit and picking up some of his unrabbity hobbies, the woods become filled with happiness once again. This simple story has a great number of possible uses in the classroom. For SEAL it would be good to use in discussions about being different, creativity and dealing with loss.As it is a simple story with only one main character, it is also good to use with lower ability pupils or for a stand-alone literacy lesson, such as a one lesson rewrite. I used it for single rewrite lesson where pupils had the lesson objective of changing the character in a story. less
