review 1: This is a difficult book to read. While the rapes and other trials were not inconceivable, the topic, the secondary characters part in it, and so forth does not lend the book well for memorable in a positive fashion. There were too many hateful characters in my opinion.Reading this book reminds me of watching the news where a heinous crime was committed and you keep watching not because you want to but because you were compelled somehow; perhaps partly due to disbelief and horror.I can also compare reading this to a Lifetime movie; again for the same reasons I mentioned above. One of my issues was the scene after the fire. Why were the locks not changed? This is about 2 people that somehow remained positive and kind despite what they both went through and are still throug... moreh most of the book. I liked the dialogues between Griffin and Olivia; the humor as well. I like their honesty to each other. The happily ever after is minimal.
review 2: 3.5 stars. my third-ever-i-actually-enjoyed-this romance novel. i'm on a roll!goodman cleverly draws seemingly cliche'ed characters who are JUUUUST a little bit more---a bit deeper, a bit more complex, and who usually deviate juuuust enough from the mold for comfort. she tends to write tortured heroines, which is sort of a fun change-up from the heroine-rescuing-the-hero trope. apparently in real life goodman is a therapist who has worked a great deal with very troubled girls and young women, so it makes sense that her novels would be working through her clients' grief, abuse, and torment in order to give them a whole psychology, a hot, hard male body to snuggle up with at night, and a happy ending.this story toyed with the abduction trope, but goodman handled it in a clever enough way to keep the anti-hero from being too icky or the relationship from feeling coercive. that's no mean feat.her dialogue is snappy, the sex is hot, and the breakfasts always sound mouth-watering. well played, jo. less
