review 1: I considered subtracting a star from this book because parts of it were so sad I felt sick, or because it ended and that's it, or because it was a challenge keeping track of every character (I'm good with neither names nor faces), but really I just loved the book. [EDIT: I disliked the ending, but I didn't care enough about it for that to have changed my opinion.]If you like books about how people relate to each other and grow (apart and together), about love and pain and wrong decisions, about family, I recommend this one. There are poly relationships, and they aren't written as some especially "evolved" or perverse thing! Oh my goodness!Would recommend. Have recommended.
review 2: The conceit of this book is that a woman with dementia in the twilight of life,
... more remembers two distinct Sliding Doors-style lives stemming from the moment she either chose to marry or not to marry her college sweetheart. The prose in this book is so pretty, but what I liked most about it was how unexpectedly the plot moved. Towards the middle of the book, I was quite sure which life I wished for the narrator, but by the end, I wasn't so convinced anymore. I probably wouldn't have picked up this book if it weren't for how much I loved Walton's Among Others, but I'm glad I did. less
