review 1: This is really a fantastic book, and one I feel very fortunate to have won in a Goodreads giveaway. Kids, this is a fun story about a boy who can't stop writing poetry. He writes poems about banana goo and pea sneezes, skateboarding and soccer, and more, and how all this poem writing is driving him crazy! Parents, this is a wonderful resource for exploring the various poetic forms. Throughout the book are many examples of poetic forms, with a guide at the end defining each, and referencing the examples in the book (from the more common haiku, free verse, sonnet, and limerick to forms unfamiliar to me such as tanka and villanelle.) Additionally, the author includes a guide to the types of voices used in the poems (for example, narrative, mask, and lyrical.)The author did a... more wonderful job of teaching about poetry without making the book feel at all dry or academic. What a great way to expose my children to poetry and learn a thing or two (ok, alot more than two!) about poetry myself. For my young children, this is a great bedtime read. As my kids get older, the book will remain front and center on our bookshelves as I'm sure it will prove valuable as a reference for English class, and hopefully inspire some creative writing.
review 2: This book is a fantastic compilation of poems and a rhyming story. The boy in the book cannot stop talking in rhyme and rhythm. His story continues on each page with a poem about what he sees or is doing. The poems are different examples of poetic forms - acrostic, cinquain, couplet, haiku, limerick. Not familiar enough with these poetic forms, no problem! There is a glossary and a definition page in the page. Each poetic form is described and then lists the corresponding page the poem was featured on. Fantastic text to have in classrooms! less
