review 1: This was such a good, sweet book. Oona and her little brother Freddy are worried about their cat, Zook, who is at the vet, and so Oona begins to tell about the previous lives of Zook. Each life is imaginative and in some way combines details from their lives in a way that comforts Freddy - and helps Oona feel better too. There are so many good bits to this story that it is difficult to choose the best parts.A few of my favorites:Zook is short for Zuchinni - which Zook likes to eat. Set in a multi-cultural neighborhood. Oona's best friends are from India, they hangout/intern/are cared for after school at a pizza place owned by a couple who are Italian and Spanish. Oona's family is Jewish. Oona uses Rebuses to help teach Freddy to read. The kids are creative and use their ... moreimaginations. Oona notices "happy endings in lifeas they are happening."A couple of the characters are "Urban Farmers." There are recipes in the back of the book for the famous Zuchinni Pizza.Definitely should be on next year's MYRA list! I think all animal lovers will like this book.
review 2: Oona's cat, Zook, is in kidney failure, so in one sense you know this isn't going to end well. But during this time Oona is telling her little brother stories about the previous lives of their cat, and is coming to terms with the loss of their father, two years ago. There are happy events, and the stories about the polydactyl cats are great, and the story doesn't end too soon. But still, it could be too sad for some readers, although for others it should be comforting.Library copy. less
