review 1: Note: only read Jocelynn Drake's Of Monsters and Men.Read this pool-side at the Vdara in Las Vegas. Like other books in this series, it is entertaining without being engaging. Let's put it this way: while I was reading the young women directly behind me noticed that the man directly in front of me was snapping photos of them (there all wearing normal bikinis - nothing exhibitionist.) One of them got up and confronted the man: "Were you taking photos of me and my friends?!?" "No," he said. "I think you were, and I think the fact that you hid your phone when I came over here proves it." She walked away and I thought the altercation was over, but instead she came back moments later with the hotel security. When confronted by security, the guys fessed up and deleted the... more photos. The security guard asked the woman if that was good enough and she said her friends deserved an apology. And he apologized. So two points: 1) I so admired that woman - she was strong, loyal, and fierce; the character she displayed in those 2 minutes was more engaging that any characters or plot lines in this short story. And 2) This story was not engaging enough to not be lured away by some relatively quiet altercation. Nonetheless, here's my synopsis:Gage (Wizard) and Trixie (Summer Elf) plan to spend Halloween night together when Jack (werewolf) shows up requesting Gage's help in keeping his pack safe that night from the Winter Elves' hunt. Gage reluctantly agrees, and delivers on his promise by creating an illusion of many Wizards around him as he demands the Winter Elves leave the pack alone. The Winter Elves agree but kidnap Trixie on their way out of town. Gage turns himself into a werewolf and tracks down Trixie, rescuing her. The end.
review 2: Three shorts by three talented authors. Each one an exciting, amazing and gripping adventure of love, acceptance and thrills, and each revolving around the Halloween holiday. This is a great read for paranormal lovers looking for a taste of new authors with great story telling and writing skill or if they just want some variety (with a side of spice) in their reading life :)Of Monsters and Men- A sweet and exciting tale held fully in a paranormal world telling an instance where different paranormal breeds band together for peace and safety of their territory when normally they are enemies while others come together for reasons of love. The Ghoul Next Door- A great eerie and fun tale of two people that are meant to be together but never really knew. Set during Halloween time with spirits, gore and evil intentions from someone known as a family member, Cassie and James take their first steps into a battle that brings them closer together. I really loved this duo and the surprises the story had in store :)Trick or Treathen- WOW did this anthology go out with a bang! Trick or Treathen was jam packed with vampires, action, excitement and enough sex to feed ones sensual desire for some time. When a human and a vampire both are trying to resist their attraction to one another, it gets frustrating, haunting and (in some ways) painful. Once an unavoidable situation occurs and brings them together the mutual attraction is addressed by both, well let’s just say… OH MY! less
