review 1: An interesting concept, but not well written. The writing style was irritating to me - the protagonist is shallow and reactive, and as a result I never invested emotion in their survival or otherwise. Many potentially interesting side-character interactions are ignored, presumably to accelerate the pace, but it left me feeling as though they were filler rather than significant contributions to the plot. I kept reading for the concept of a world inhabited by fantasy creatures, but the bottom line is that I wouldn't recommend this to my friends.
review 2: I must preface this review by saying two things:1) If you dislike it when threads are left hanging in the wind in a story, you will not be happy.2) If you like it when threads are hanging in the wind, you will
... more be happy.There.I found the concept of this story interesting, particularly the ability to perform magic/potions with tattoos. I think the world itself has some interesting potential since these creatures are known and people just deal with it. That said, it was a very anemic book in terms of world building. It was just sparse across the board.I also found the story from Gage's POV very interesting. It was just awkward feeling overall. I can't explain WHAT it was specifically but it was weird. I wasn't fond of him as a character--OR, I wasn't fond of how he was written. I can't honestly tell.Do you hate reviews like this? I do too but this book just left me feeling uncertain about so much.Trixie. Oh where to start with her, or more precisely, Gage's image of her and his obsession with her. Yuck.Did I mention threads hanging in the wind? Yeah .. big one with Trixie.I guess I just felt disappointed in the book overall. It started off at a decent pace and then just felt like I was stuck in the mud for awhile. I put it down and came back to it after reading a few other books and pushed through it. It's unlikely I'll put up the remaining books, despite the reviews being better. less

I really enjoyed this book. It is a bit strange to read from a male point of view, especially during the love scene. Gage has a lot of bad luck in this book, everything he does leads to disaster, and when he tries to solve one problem, it leads to the next. Still, he keeps trying to put things to rights, and stay alive and protect his few friends. He has been in love with his assistant Trixie for a few years now, but he knows he has to keep his distance. Knowing he is a wizard will only endanger her from the Ivory Towers. His guardian Gideon will see to that. Or is Gideon having his own agenda here, and not so eager to have Gage brought before the Council to be executed for using magic other than self defense?I love worlds inhabited by multiple species and lots of intrigue and bad guys, and the Asylum series sure has all that. It is original and fast paced and just fun to read. Using magic and magical items in tattoos to make them work is a nice concept. And it can go so very wrong ...I like Gage, Trixie (who is Fae) and Bronx (who is a Troll) and I sure look forward to reading many more stories about them. There are a few books out now and several short stories and I will make sure to find them all. 8 stars.

I actually passed on this book a couple of times after reading the first few pages because Gideon's character was so flat and cliched. It wasn't until I picked up the second book in the series (Dead Man's Deal) from a discount bin that I realized there was a lot more depth to the book than my initial impression led me to believe. Gage is the quintessential reluctant hero. He just wants to do his job and live a simple life flying under the radar. But imbalances in the world order always seem to find their way to his doorstep. And, as in all great urban fantasy, the challenges are unrelenting. Jocelynn Drake does a great job finding inventive solutions for Gage. The unexpected allies and true friendship that Gage finds at the end balance out the sacrifices that he makes -- until the time comes in the future when he will have to pay up old debts (way to keep your readers in suspense and pain, Ms. Drake!).
